How to play 29 Card Game

đź”° Introduction

Twenty Nine is a popular trick-taking card game in South Asia, especially in Bangladesh and India. It’s part of a family of games where the Jack (J) and Nine (9) are the highest cards in every suit. The game likely originated from European Jass games and was adapted locally over time.

👥 Players & Cards

  • Players: 4 players in fixed partnerships (teammates sit opposite)
  • Cards Used: 32 cards from a standard 52-card deck
    (Remove all 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, and 6s – except 2–5 for trump indicators and 6s for scoring)

Card ranking (from high to low in every suit):
J > 9 > A > 10 > K > Q > 8 > 7

Card point values:

  • Jack (J) = 3 points
  • Nine (9) = 2 points
  • Ace (A) = 1 point
  • Ten (10) = 1 point
  • King, Queen, 8, 7 = 0 points

➡️ Total points in the game = 28

Extra cards (2–5) are used as trump indicators, and 6s are used as scoring tools.

🧠 Objective

Win tricks that contain high-point cards and reach or exceed your team’s bid.

🎴 Dealing & Bidding

  • Play moves counter-clockwise
  • The dealer shuffles, and the player to the right cuts
  • Each player receives 4 cards first
  • Bidding starts with the player to the dealer’s right

Bidding rules:

  • Bid is a number from 16 to 28
  • Players bid how many card points they believe their team can collect
  • If a player doesn’t want to bid higher, they can pass
  • A player can match a previous bid if they placed it first
  • Highest bidder wins the right to choose trump suit

Trump selection:

  • Bidder secretly selects one of the unused 2–5 cards to show trump suit (e.g., 2â™  means Spades are trump)
  • The card is placed face down, so others don’t know the trump suit
  • Dealer then gives the remaining 4 cards to each player (total 8 cards)

🕹️ Playing the Game

  • The player to the right of the dealer leads the first card
  • Must follow suit if possible
  • If a player can’t follow suit, he can ask the bidder to show the trump by revealing the indicator card
  • If a player flips the trump, then he has to play a trump card on that turn if he has one
  • Once trump is revealed:
    • Trick is won by the highest trump
    • If no trumps are played, the highest card of the lead suit wins the trick

đź‘‘ Marriage (Pair) Rule

  • If a player holds King & Queen of trump suit, they can declare a Pair (Marriage)
  • Can only be declared after their team has won at least one trick (including the trump reveal trick)
  • If bidder’s team declares:
    • Required bid reduces by 4 points (minimum bid still must be at least 16)
  • If opponent team declares:
    • Required bid for the bidder increases by 4 (up to max 28)

📊 Scoring

  • After all 8 tricks:
    • Each team counts their card points
  • If bidding team reaches or exceeds the (adjusted) bid:
    • They gain +1 game point
  • If they fail:
    • They lose –1 game point
  • Opponent team’s score does not change

Score tracking:

  • Each team uses red 6 and black 6 to mark score
    • Red = +1
    • Black = –1
  • Game ends when a team reaches:
    • +6 (6 red) = WIN
    • –6 (6 black) = LOSS

🎯 Special Rules & Variations (Common in Bangladesh)

âž• Extra Rules:

  • Double: Opponent team can challenge the bid (score changes by ±2)
  • Re-Double: Bidder can respond to double (score changes by ±4)
  • Single Hand: One player can bid to play alone vs the other 3 (must have strong hand)
  • 7th Card Trump: Trump suit is revealed using your 7th card
  • Joker Trump: Only the highest card wins – no regular ranking
  • Reverse Trump: 7 becomes the highest and J the lowest (used in some local styles)

🛑 When the Game is Cancelled:

  • Everyone passes during bidding
  • Invalid hand: no trump card in one team players or no point card in a single players hand
  • All Jacks with one player (rare)
  • 7’th card type is not available in hand or no points of that type in hand

âś… Custom Rules (Optional)

  • Last Trick Bonus: 1 extra point for winning the last trick
  • Half-Point Rule: If bidder’s team doesn’t win half their bid, penalty applies
  • Reverse: 7 is the highest card and J is the lowest

🧠 Tips to Win

  • Focus on gathering points, not just winning many tricks
  • Keep track of trump cards played
  • Remember which Jacks have been played
  • Support your partner’s win by playing low when needed
  • Watch suits others are out of
  • Help partner trump if they are out of a suit
  • Advanced: Memorize who played which cards
